Play Pass by Google
In addition to buying the apps directly, Android users will likely have an alternative way to obtain a variety of premium applications and games, namely through the brand new subscription mechanism by Google.
What is a Play Pass?
The mechanism referred to is called “Play Pass” and is currently being tested by Google. The concept is similar to Apple Arcade for iOS which was launched earlier this year, but with cheaper subscription fee.
Apple is known to set a monthly Arcade subscription for the price of 7.99 US dollars per month. Meanwhile, the Google Play Pass will be priced at 4.99 US dollars per month.
A leaked Play Pass screenshot contains information that states that customers will get access to “hundreds of premium games and applications without ads, download fees, or in-app purchases”. For example, upon purchasing the Play Pass, user can get the farming simulation hit game, Stardew Valley for free.
A Google spokesperson said that the Play Pass really do exists and is being tested, as summarized by KompasTekno from the Android Authority, Monday (5/8/2019). However, the subscription fees mentioned above is a subject to change.
The success of the subscription model is still unknown whether it will work or not, as so far Android users tend to spend less on apps than iOS users overall.
