Tinder Latest Payment Feature
Match Group’s online dating service, Tinder has recently tested the latest payment feature in its application, which allows Tinder users to buy Tinder Plus or Tinder Gold services without going through the Play Store.
Tinder intentionally launched the feature presumably because they did not want to pay the amount of tax requested by Google, if there were in-app purchase (items purchased within the application) that were carried out in the Tinder application. Previously, Netflix and Spotify services had tried similar practices.
How much does Tinder had to pay for the tax?
The in-app purchase tax on the Play Store alone can reach up to 30%, so it will have an effect on the profits received by Match Group, because Tinder is a subscription service.
Tinder does not confirm this allegations directly. Match Group spokesman Justine Sacco said that the direct payment feature was introduced to make it easier for users to make payments on Tinder.
“We continue to test the latest features to provide convenience for our users,” Justine said, as quoted by KompasTekno from Engadget, Tuesday (07/23/2019). “We will always present choices that are beneficial and practical for users, one of which is this payment option,” he added.
Now, with this feature, instead of using the Play Store, Tinder users can use the payment system embedded directly in the application, which uses detailed credit card information.
When a user entered their credit card details, the Tinder application will use the credit card as the default payment system and will eliminate payment options through Play Store.
That way, Tinder can side step the Google platform and avoid taxes taken by the Play Store for all in-app purchases on the platform.
Tinder is not the only one taking extra steps to avoid taxes on the Play Store platform. Previously, a number of applications such as Netflix, Spotify and Fortnite which also had similar payment options.
Subscription payment services on the Spotify music platform for example, can be obtained by visiting the Spotify site without having to go through the Google Play Store, as well as the Netflix subscription service.
