The game console manufacturer, Nintendo, seems to be worried that the current Joy-Con controller design is not flexible nor ergonomic enough. Seen from the patent, this Japanese company wants to make a fundamental change to its controller.
Nintendo Patented a Flexible Joy-con Design, What’s It Like?
Nintendo filed a patent related to Joy-Con with a hinge that would make the top half slightly bend-able downwards. This section will provide a more ergonomic grip.
As quoted from Engadget, Tuesday (09/10/2019), Joy-Con does not seem to have a change in functions besides its design. The biggest change is only seen on the flexible circuit board to support the changes outside.
Nintendo has made several minor changes to Joy-Con’s internal controller. Given that the changes occur only in the internal part, the appearance outside remains the same.
If the patent was realized, it will be technically the first revision to change the controller body. Of course, this is not necessarily the case because this design remains a patent for now.
The presence of this patent indicates that Nintendo is still looking for ways to update the Joy-Con design. So, it is not surprising to see Joy-Con’s design in future change, whether trivially or drastically.
