The CIA’s choice to use Instagram cannot be outcast from its means to recruit a younger generation of agents and analysts.
“Joining Instagram is another way so we can share stories with those talented young of Americans. Through an Instagram acc, you can take a look at the agency’s life. But don’t expect us to promise selfie in the secret location,” said the CIA vice, as quoted from The Telegraph.
Moreover, the CIA also wants to ignite the interest of Instagram users – who are dominated by young people- about the CIA’s global mission. Basically those missions are about how the CIA carried out its secret missions.
In a short time, CIA official Instagram acc have been followed by tens of thousands of followers. Until Saturday (27/4), there were 53,900 users following it.
The CIA acc also doesn’t seem to follow any other Instagram users acc. A netizen commented, “Do not believe that[the CIA doesn’t follow anyone], they follow everyone.”
In its first upload, the CIA invited the netizens to play a riddle. They uploaded a photo shows a messy table. In the statement, the CIA wrote, “I spy with my little eye…”.
It is believed, all the items on the table are related to spying equipment. These include bags, Arabic notebook, fake hair, foreign banknotes, and a case that says ‘PULP SECRET TOP’. Netizens are invited to describe the meaning of the items on the table.
No doubt, the photo of the messy table immediately presents amateur detectives on the timeline. Most argue that the clock symbol that shows 8.46 marks the time when the first plane crashed into the World Trade Center in September 2001.
There was also a security badge hanging on the chair. If seen more closely, the badge shows an old photo of the CIA Director, Gina Haspel.
The rapid development of social media in recent years has made intelligence services face increasing challenges.
In the modern era, social media networks were even used by certain groups with bad proposes. Also, social media has been used to manipulate the results of US democratic parties.
As an intelligence agency, the CIA and other agencies face a dilemma. Consider increasing public awareness through social media as the most effective platform or staying silent hiding without an acc.
In 2014, the CIA decided to join Facebook and Twitter. The CIA Twitter acc now has 2.6 million followers.
