Today, many people are looking for an immediate online release of a new blockbuster movie. That’s why they become the target for scammers. Legitimate services certainly not provide it especially when the film hasn’t been released.
Every movie currently on air in the cinema will usually not be available in streaming services until the near future. Digital releases can take months or longer.
But, scammers would try to convince you that they can provide those movies immediately. For example, a fraud scheme related to the Avengers: Endgame that just released lately. There are lots of Marvel fans targeted by those scammers only from this particular movie.
Fans Become Target for Scammers
In Kaspersky’s statement, fraud can start from a simple search. The results include websites that promise users to download or view Avengers: Endgame online. Then, the actual streaming activity starts without incident.
However, malicious threats will come after the streaming starts. There, a message will appear asking you to create an account.
Registration will not be charged, but the user must provide an e-mail address and create a password. Then, after clicking ‘Continue,’ the account must be validated.
This validation requires user billing information and credit card details, including the CVC code printed on the back of the card. Websites promising information will only be used to ensure users from certain countries where the site licensed to distribute its content.
There, users will not be charged with anything. But, of course, there will be no film as the scammers promised.
A few seconds the original content displayed by scammers is only part of the trailer. In the end, the information provided by the user ends up in the hands of a scammer.
There is No Reason to Create an Account on a Dangerous Online Website
Most visitors will leave the site after being asked for their credit card details. However, scammers have obtained e-mail addresses and passwords already.
In fact, people still tend to use the same password for many accounts. Therefore, some combinations of e-mails and passwords become the scammers’ target. The combination used on these websites might be compatible with other website credentials such as online stores, game services, streaming, e-mail accounts, social media, and more.
“Social engineering methods are aimed at exploiting one’s emotions. An influential and highly loved franchise with a huge global fan base seems to be the perfect target. The temptation to take some security shortcuts to watch a long-awaited movie and not worry about spoilers or sold-out tickets can prove to be very attractive to loyal fans. That is the prey for perpetrators, “said security researcher at Kaspersky Lab Tatyana Sidorina.
In order not to become an easy target for scammers, Kaspersky recommends not clicking on links in e-mail, text, instant messages, or social media posts if they are from unknown people or organizations. Check the address of the suspicious source when there is personal or financial information requested.
Next, you need to separate special money for online entertainment with bank cards and accounts. This method will help avoid serious financial losses if your bank details are stolen.
Finally, use reliable security solutions for comprehensive protection from various threats.
