Instagram Threads as a rival for Snapchat
A few years ago Instagram launched a standalone application for messages called Direct. In fact, the photo-sharing service already has a direct messaging feature in the application.
They finally realized the idea of making a standalone messaging application was not good. So the service owned by Facebook decided to turn off Direct earlier this year.
Nevertheless, they do not seem to consider Direct as the end. According to a report from The Verge, Instagram is working on a standalone application called Threads.
This application becomes an improved version of Direct. Through it, users can share many things including location, travel speed, even battery life.
Quoted from Ubergizmo, Tuesday (8/27/2019), Threads will be a way for Instagram to compete with Snapchat and make users spend more time in the application. Given the current average user spends more time on Snapchat.
They hope that by creating a messaging application between friends, it can change their situation. So far, Instagram is better known as a photo-sharing service instead of focusing on messaging.
So, this step is quite interesting. Unfortunately, they do not want to reveal information related to Threads.
However, the application is reportedly currently being tested internally on Facebook. Whether it is launched or not becomes a different matter.
