To practice artificial intelligence technology, the system must learn or recognize human faces. With the ability to recognize faces, it is expected that the system can have better accuracy.
Quoted from Antaranews, in order to meet the large data requirements for artificial intelligence training, companies in China give cooking utensils for free to citizens who want to submit photos of their faces.
In a village in Henan Province, China, residents lined the road to provide data of their faces. In return, the company give them pots, teacups, even kettles.
“The biggest project involves 10,000 people, coming from residents living in this area,” Qianji Data CEO Liu Yangfeng was quoted as saying on Friday.
How the AI Training Works
A woman stands in front of a camera supported by a tripod. She held a photo of herself showing her head, eyes and nose cut in front of her face, then slowly turned.
Villagers took turns taking the queue number, some said this was the fourth time they had joined a similar project.
Citizens’ photos will be used to train this software to recognize real facial features and photos.
“We are making more data sets for company algorithms so they can develop artificial intelligence in China,” Liu said.
But, Liu was not willing to mention the client who worked with Qianji.
China is the place for collecting data and labels because there are so many requests from the artificial intelligence sector. The Chinese government said that artificial intelligence is a machine for economic development and a tool for social control.
Many companies in China have invested heavily in Artificial Intelligence, the machine learning division, the core of facial recognition systems and other systems.
Large companies such as Alibaba Group Holdings, Tencent Holdings, Baidu Inc. and startup companies use artificial intelligence.
Artificial intelligence products in China are very diverse, ranging from facial recognition based payments, automatic surveillance to news readers.
