Playing as a detective in Kamurocho city will never feel the same again. Yes, Judgment brings a different ambient compared with the previous Yakuza game.
Yakuza games have become a franchise with loyal fans not only in Japan but throughout the world. After we presented Kiryu Kazuma’s last adventure on Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, now SEGA introduces Judgment (or Judge Eyes: Shinigami no Yuigon for selling in Japan region)
Judgment is a Yakuza spin-off game series with Action-Adventure genre and an exclusive release for Playstation 4 only. Its digital version was released on June 21, 2019, while the physical version was released on June 25, 2019.
1. The story
The main story focuses on Takayuki Yagami (Takuya Kimura) as a private investigator who wants to unravel the mystery of the yakuza murders that took place in Kamurocho for months.
Yagami had to gather evidence to reveal the culprit and also reveal the secret behind the murder. To do this, Yagami must gather information, investigate the crime scene, gather evidence, and beat up the thugs that appear before him.
As a fixed formula for stories in the Yakuza series, many unexpected twist plots will occur during the game. So, prepare yourself to be surprised.
2. The actors
Following the previous Yakuza series, Judgment also presents Japanese veteran actors and actresses, including:
- Takuya Kimura (Kohei Kuryu, Hero)
- Akira Nakao (Ryuzo 7);
- Kenichi Takito (Samurai X);
- Shosuke Tanihara (Birthday Card);
- Shinshu Fuji (Risotto Nero, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure);
- Risa Shimizu (Lynne, Attack on Titan);
- Yuko Kaida (Claire Redfield, Resident Evil 2 Remake).
3. New Features
As said before, this Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio game presents a new style in the game from the Yakuza franchise.
In this mode, you must find and collect clues to solve your case. Sometimes, you also have to tail people and take photos of them. If you can gather all the evidence, you will not only receive XP points, but also money as a bonus.
The Court Trial made Yagami become the evidence collector for the lawyer he helped. The defense attorney will order Yagami to gather as much evidence as possible to prove that their client is innocent.
Gameplay will revolve around making choices in words and showing the correct evidence.
This one mode is a new feature in the Yakuza series.
To keep the investigations proceed smoothly, you must disguise yourself as an anonymous or infiltrate as a member of a group. Yagami can change clothes to suit his disguise professions, such as a repairman, pilot, motorcycle gang member, or vampire. However, this feature is limited to the investigation process – which means you can’t freely change costumes when the story goes.
4. Judgment is not only talking about Detective and Investigation!
You have the whole Kamuchoro city to explore. This city based on the Kabuki-Cho district, Shinjuku, Japan. What makes Kamurocho different in Judgment lies in the mini-games offered.
Yagami has games that he likes, such as drone races, VR Board games, Pinball, and Kamuro of the Dead (arcade shooter game containing monsters from Yakuza Dead Souls). In addition, there are also sports Dart throwing and Baseball Batting.
5. Yagami’s fighting style
Yagami has two main fighting styles. It was Crane Style, which allows you to use your feet to sweep enemies around you, and Tiger Style, to focus on defeating one enemy by attacking repeatedly. You can change the fighting style as much as you like.
6. Conclusion: is it worth your time?
If you like Dorama (Japanese drama shows), traditional Japanese culture, Yakuza, and/or Ace Attorney series, Judgment will suits you best.
Note for newcomers in the Yakuza franchise, Judgment can be the best starting point if you want to explore the Yakuza series. If you like the concept offered by this game, go play Yakuza Kiwami first. But if you like this game already, then Judgment is the starting point for you to enjoy other Yakuza-themed games.
