Technicians in the United States (US) claim to have designed the thinnest lens. Instead of being curved, this new lens is actually flat and warps the light directly on the camera sensor.
This thinnest lens was developed by engineers at the University of Utah. They believe the lens can be used to flatten the bulge of a smartphone camera and add it to drones and night vision for military purposes.
The thinnest lens that very light
“Our lenses are one hundred times lighter and a thousand times thinner. But, their performance can be as good as conventional lenses,” said co-author or graduate student in computer engineering Monjurul Meem, quoted from the Daily Mail, Friday (11/10/2019).
Conventional curved lenses take the light that reflects off an object and bend it before finally reaching the camera sensor that forms a digital image. Whereas the new lens has many microstructures, each bending the light in the right direction on the sensor.
The team has developed a fabrication process with a new type of polymer together with an algorithm that can calculate the geometry of this microstructure.
“You can think of this microstructure as very small lens pixels. They are not the lenses themselves but all work together to act as lenses,” Menon said.
As a result, the lens becomes flat instead of curved and 20 times thinner than a human hair. In fact, the lens has the added ability to be used as thermal imaging to see objects in the dark.
Faster use of this technology will enable lighter military drones for night missions or mapping forest fires and finding victims of natural disasters. In addition, soldiers in the field can also carry night vision cameras that are much lighter for a longer duration.
Menon said this new thinnest lens could also be cheaper to produce because its design allowed them to make it from plastic, not glass. This optical lens can save Apple from many criticisms of the iPhone 11 being ridiculed for its three prominent lenses.
Apple boasts a camera that will allow fans to get better photo capabilities than before. But, the design on the iPhone 11 apparently did not impress his fans.
One person claims three cameras make the phone resemble a coconut. While others compare designs with bowling balls.
